Permissions for kids photos

Hi Dianne, Mark and Tobin,

It’s not always that bad and needn’t be that painful.

As usual with most of these things Dianne, talk to the school. In fact talk to several schools as you are likely to get different degrees of caution.

Some will be much more relaxed than others, some will say that’s fine but make sure that xxx isn’t in the shots, a few may  say ‘no’ – but many schools will have a standard form that they can send out with a few days notice.

As you are taking stills, you’re not likely to include the whole class and you won’t know exactly what you will want to use until you’ve had time to study the results. Once you’ve chosen your pictures I would recommend that you go back and get specific permission from the parents of the kids in your chosen pictures via the school (keeping in mind that you may have to contact both parents if they happen to be separated). I guess if one of the parents objects then you’ll have to ditch that particular picture.

I did this recently and had no problems at all.

Very best wishes

Steve

That’s fine as long as you have a model release form for each student signed by their parent/guardian which you then keep in big file for all eternity. Make sure all the possibilities you intend to use the images for are included in the release, including ones you might not have thought of (i.e. possible future uses). And make sure if not being released to third parties they are kept secure  - images have a way of creeping especially when there are press enquiries and the images are sitting on a hard drive. And finally be firm – anyone who doesn’t have a release cannot be included in the shots. Have had to bin an entire half hour show due to this before.

Other than that good luck - Oh and in terms of the release forms make sure they are given out at least four weeks before you intend to visit so that they can be forgotten to be brought in, re-issued, eaten by the dog, re-issued again, left at school, taken home again and finally hopefully brought in signed just in time.

I hope someone can help me. I remember a good while ago there was a discussion on the list about the restrictions and permissions that applied when taking photos of children. I can't remember the recommendatons but if anyone can point me in the direction of authoritative info I'd be grateful.

We plan to visit a school to take a series of pics of kids in science classes. The pics will be used in furture publications - electronic and print. They will not be made available to third parties.

We have the teacher's permission and I imagine model release forms for the individual kids will be needed - are there any other rules we need to be aware of?

All help very gratefully received

thanks - Dianne
