How about Primo Levi? He even used his chemistry in his literature.

Subject: Re: [PSCI-COM] Famous people with science degrees

Hi, All

While its interesting to highlight the 'famous' people with science
degrees, it seems that this may be counter productive because most of
the 'famous' have not achieved their 'fame' by having anything much
to do with science. Its nice to know that Brian May nearly got a PhD
in astrophysics - but it didn't help him become famous.

I think it would be much more interesting to look at people who have
achieved 'fame' who also have a serious interest in, or have made a
worthwhile contribution to some branch of science. These people (and
there will be fewer of them than have gone the other way) may be
better role models or icons because presumably they are in some sense
'cool' and are interested in or involved in science in some way.

Does anyone have any suggestions about people who fit this
description, or have I just described an empty set?

I have a fuzzy recollection that a well-known TV comedian was, in his
private life, a serious and dedicated amateur astronomer who did
useful work in something like variable star observing.

On firmer ground, even if the scientific connection is a bit , or
even a lot, thin Robert Hardy, the Actor, is acknowledged as a
leading expert on the history of military archery, and was
responsible for the conservation and researching of the remarkable
collection of longbows recovered from the Mary Rose in Portsmouth
Harbour.

The gauntlet is down....

Cheers
