Job vacancy: part-time web developer for public engagement team

The role of web developer (part-time: 20 hours per week) exists within the Communication and Public Engagement Programme at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute – a world-leading genomic research institute -- in Hinxton, Cambridge (http://www.sanger.ac.uk/Teams/Team104/). This programme promotes understanding of the nature, discoveries and wonder of science and its implications for individuals and society. Programme staff work closely with Sanger Institute scientists to develop resources that stimulate public interest in biomedical science and encourage informed discussions of relevant issues. These close collaborations also help to foster a community of scientists who can effectively engage with the public.

The web developer will work with scientists, educators, animators and other web developers/programmers to produce and publish on- and offline interactive resources about Sanger Institute research.This may involve applying a working knowledge of action script to Macromedia Flash animations, creating stand-alone programs for educational use or building accessible interfaces for existing research applications.

He/she will work within an existing web infrastructure to provide accessible applications and resources with coherent, logical structures and clear navigation. The candidate will have a computer or biological science qualification (or equivalent relevant experience). He/she will be able to demonstrate proficiency in HTML, CSS, Javascript and PERL. Experience of integrating Flash and other technologies, proficiency with dynamic Flash v6 and above (using XML and AS files) would be highly desirable, as would experience with LINUX/UNIX environments, MySQL & relational database concepts.

The candidate should also demonstrate a willingness to work within a multidisciplinary team and an interest in applying their skills and knowledge to solve a challenging array of data delivery/interactivity issues. Salary range £20,000 to £26,000 per annum pro-rata (dependent on experience). The closing date for applications is 24th November 2006
