Media Relations Manager (12 Month Maternity Cover)

Whether it's the university's Provost giving an interview on higher education policy on the evening news or the latest innovative discovery by one of its world class team of scientists making headlines around the globe, UCL is rarely out of the media spotlight. Founded in 1826, UCL is the oldest and largest part of the University of London, and is one of the world's most highly respected research institutions. UCL is now looking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced PR professional to join its media relations team.

The Role: The Media Relations Manager is responsible for planning and implementing media relations strategies on a diverse range of issues, and working to deliver positive coverage of the university. The postholder will work with the appropriate national, international, regional and local media to ensure that UCL's key messages are delivered to its range of audiences. S/he will be expected to respond to a variety of calls on a daily basis, write and edit news releases and press statements, update web pages, organise media briefings and develop and maintain excellent relationships with the media and the UCL community, using expertise and creativity to advise on appropriate media handling whenever necessary.

The Person: The successful candidate will be a graduate with a minimum of three years experience of media work, and able to demonstrate a proven track record of handling a wide range of media. S/he will be confident, calm under pressure, results-oriented and energetic, will have outstanding communication skills and be politically astute. Experience of the higher education sector, and/or a scientific or medical background is desirable but not essential.

The post is a Grade 7, the salary for which ranges from £25,633 to £31,525 (excluding a London Allowance of £2,472). Progression through the salary scale is incremental. Cost of living pay awards are negotiated nationally and are normally effective from 1 August each year. There is also a generous holiday entitlement of 33 days and an excellent pension scheme, amongst other benefits.
