The other option is to find a friend who has Adobe Acrobat and get them
to stitch the chapters together, doesn't that long...
Or email the authors and ask for a pdf of the whole thing.

Many organisations still live in a print-centred world since most people
just end up printing out the pdf anyway!!

The option to retrieve chapters is, indeed, a great idea. Well done. But
the "whole book" option is also useful.

This is how the Department of Trade and Industry lets you retrieve the
latest energy review, for example.

http://www.dti.gov.uk/energy/review/index.html

Not that I gold this up as a good site, it is awfully slow and would not
let me get at some of the files over the weekend.

There are several reasons for wanting one big file. For example, it is
not possible to "electronically index" a paper copy on a PC. I have
software that allows me to find words in PDF files, so I could home in
on the relevant bits of the report without having to hold lots of little
files.

I mention this on this list partly because we have already had one
recent example of user hostile PDF files. (Not, I hasten to add, that
separate chapters are really that bad.) And because the means of
communication probably mean more to the people on this list than they do
to other "e-groups".

The web has changed the way in which communication works, and yet many
organisations still seem to live in a print centred world.

No deep and meaningful perceived lack-of-broadband reason. As the book
is free and available to order online
(http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/doc_WTX032132.html) - we thought if you
wanted the whole book - you'd request a hard copy, yet also wanted to
provide the option of being able to download specific chapters/ essays
of interest.

Cheers

Thanks. Any reason why you don't offer the whole book as a single file?

After all, this is broadband Britain.

action

A major new book on public engagement with science in now available from
the Wellcome Trust.

"Engaging Science: Thoughts, deeds, analysis and action" features essays
from leading researchers, practitioners and commentators. It examines
what we have learned about the relationships between these groups over
the past decade and what the implications are for future practice.

Topics include public attitudes to science, the role of the media in
public engagement, the scientists' perspective, implications for
education, linking the public to policy making and the role of
campaigning groups.

"Engaging Science" also includes summaries of key Wellcome Trust-funded
projects and initiatives supported over the past decade.

Copies are available free of charge.

Best wishes
