Press release: 3 April 2006
For immediate Release

Award for science and development news agency

David Dickson, director of the Science and Development Network
(SciDev.Net), has been awarded the 2006 'Award for Meritorious
Achievement' by the Council of Science Editors (CSE), an international
body of editors from leading scientific and medical journals.

The annual award - the highest honour bestowed by the CSE - is intended
to highlight efforts to improve scientific communication through "the
pursuit of high standards in all activities connected with editing".

The president of the CSE, Richard Horton, also editor of The Lancet,
praised Dickson's "outstanding work" in pursuing this goal by leading
the team that has created and developed SciDev.Net's free-access science
website (www.scidev.net <http://www.scidev.net/> ).

SciDev.Net was set up in 2001 with the support of the journals Science
and Nature to provide news and stimulate debate about the role of
science and technology in meeting the social and economic needs of
developing countries.

In addition to the work of its own team of science journalists, the
website commissions news and analytical articles from a growing network
of journalists and researchers across the developing world.

It also has exclusive free access to a selection of articles from Nature
and Science every week. More than 22,500 users have registered with the
website since it was launched.

"I am delighted and honoured that the CSE has recognised our work in
this way, and would like to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication
of all those current and former staff who have made this achievement
possible," said Dickson on being notified of the award.

Previous awardees - which can be either individuals or institutions -
include the editor and staff of Science (1999), Drummond Rennie, deputy
editor of the Journal of the America Medical Association (2001), and
Marcia Angell, editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine
(2003).

The award, a bronze medal, will be presented during a ceremony on 22 May
during the CSE Annual Meeting in Tampa, Florida.
