Researchers in Residence Scheme - Invitation to tender

The Researchers in Residence (RinR) Scheme, which has been running
since 1994, is jointly funded by Research Councils UK and the Wellcome
Trust. The scheme provides UK schools with access to young, positive
role-models in the physical, social, life and earth sciences and the
humanities, who work alongside teachers and pupils in the classroom. By
doing so, it meets its twin aims of engaging pupils with contemporary
research, and providing opportunities for early-stage researchers to
develop and use their communication skills.

The contractor will be required to:
1. Ensure that at least 200 early-stage researchers each year complete
placements in UK schools with pupils between the ages of 11 and 18,
ensuring that there is good geographical coverage, and that Researchers
in Residence are drawn from as diverse a range of social groups as
possible.
2. Provide a package of training, guidance and support to ensure that
early-stage researchers are able to effectively complete their
placement.
3. Provide a programme of activity to give pupils the opportunity to
showcase the work they have done in collaboration with an RinR.
4. Provide mechanisms for the monitoring and evaluation of the scheme.
5. Efficiently manage the day-to-day operation of the scheme, and work
closely with the funders on strategic planning for future developments.

The current contract for management of the RinR scheme expires in July
2006, and RCUK and The Wellcome Trust propose to tender for a new
programme from 1 July 2006 for a period of three years and one month,
with a review at the end of this period and the option to extend for a
further two years.

These requirements are being advertised in the Official Journal of the
European Union (OJEU) under the open procedure. Information packs must
be requested before Wednesday 26 April 2006. The time limit for receipt
of tenders is Friday 5 May 2006.
