Mike, Let me be blunt otherwise it will take me an hour to write this. Why resurrect a thread only to do so on the basis of a misunderstanding? Proof reading and editing are not the same thing as each other. Moreover, if a proof reader suggests the reconstruction of some or all of a piece of work along the lines you have suggested, then get another proof reader or hire an editor or extend the terms of reference for your proof reader. Whatever I said on the topic of proof reading in that thread you mention has nothing to do with what you are talking about. We did have some disagreement over the value and appropriateness of paid for proof reading. I think that there is a big difference between officially sanctioned or services offered by an institution and private services offered. Bradford providing this facility allows for guidance as to what is acceptable to be provided to the proof reader. There is less control and protection for privately paid proof readers, where who pays the piper calls the tune. Imagine the situation where the proof reader marks a section for rewriting, but the client requests "Oh can you 'suggest' how to rewrite this?" where the ultimate pressure is the risk of not being paid. Or what a proof reader is to do if s/he finds cut and paste sections of an essay. I think I have always had a problem with who pays and what limits that places on a working relationship. Where the university provides the service, or regulates it at least, both the student and proof reader are better protected. I hope that more places take Bradford's lead. P.S.
