Judging by the responses there are several OH nurses who are in the same
position. I guess Bashyr and others who are meeting with the NMC should take
this forward. I also think that is what we pay our fees to the RCN for - and
maybe if all of you who are in a similar boat wrote to the NMC outlining
your problems to Liz Plastow and indicating that you are also sending copies
of your letters to Carol Bannister/Jan Maw at the RCN and your local RCN
Officer you may get some action - particularly if they are deluged with
letters! (the RCN has a large legal department for members) There is power
in numbers. For those who are not RCN members maybe the AOHNP can help in a
similar way. Finally if you note who is writing on this forum and those with
similar problems agree then you could communicate off list to deal with this
as a group project. Individually you will have problems - together you may
stir them up - the more the merrier.

However, a word of caution - as someone who qualified with a certificate in
OH in the darkages and got my masters in OH 13 years ago - how come I had no
problem getting on to the 3rd part of the register? What happened that you
people didn't? My masters course was not the OH course but was OH&S... I am
a bit confused.

Good luck! Greta

Hello Greta

The reason that you got automatic registration on the new RSCPHN register
was because you had recorded your OHNC. Unfortunately some practitioners
decided, for personal reasons, that they did not wish to pay for this
recording at the time they qualified. There was no advantage at the time.
Unfortuately the goal posts have now moved. In a few years time not being
registered as a RSCPHN may be a serious disadvantage. Playing devil's
advocate --- if there is no legal requirement to employ a nurse in the OH
setting how can there be a requirement to only employ a nurse who is
registered as an RSCPHN???? Employers set their own ground rules.

A word of caution to those who have no intention of paying for such
registration. Up until the mid 80's the qualification in OH nursing was the
OHNC. Looking at job ads those that state that a qualification is required
no longer refer to the OHNC. (The OHNC was an excellent qualification and
that is the first qualification I obtained in OH) In the future
advertisments may only refer to RSCPHN registration!

Not only should OHNs be considering this important issue but also the future
of OHN education. The NMC seem to want courses which train OHNs to be taught
side by side with other SCPHNs with no specialist modules. A number of
practitioners have expressed their concerns re this. There is little point
in raising it with the universities we have no control over this- take your
concerns direct to the NMC.
