I think that Patrick has raised important concerns about Web 2.0. In my opinion, some of the concepts of Web 2.0 are highly problematic to not only the curator but to many artists, writers and independent publishers who use the Internet for the distribution of their work. I hope someone will propose Web 3.0 where it combines that best of Web 1.0 and 2.0. I see too many independent print publications closing shop and the Internet maybe the last place for the independent media/arts magazine to be able to continue to publish because of the high costs of print. I think there are advantages to consumer-driven content but there should be "islands" where people can visit, read and be intellectually stimulated. I am fearful that Web 2.0 may become a place for big business and where independent philosophical voices will be lost among senseless chatter. As an independent curator/producer, I prefer the concept of the portal because it allows me to have control over the presentation of content that I am providing and for direction in the discourse that I am hoping to facilitate. However, with this all said, I believe that SpacePlace is an important project especially for Web curators to grapple with because it raises many issues that one needs to contend with in their own practice.
