Subject: UK Intrapartum Guidelines

At the 3rd International Normal Birth Conferences last week, Gill Gyte, consumer representative on the UK NICE Guideline Group examining intrapartum care, briefed us about this very important guideline, whose draft version will be published on the 22nd of June. All of us shared the in her concern that feedback be given during a 9-10 week period (from June 22nd until August 29th). This feedback can only be through a registered Stakeholder group that is UK-based and many interested parties are already registered on the NICE web site for this purpose. However, it was agreed at the Meeting that anyone who doesn't have a link with a registered stakeholder group which probably includes many on this list external to the UK, can feedback comments to me and I will channel them through our Midwifery Stakeholder group at the University of Central Lancashire.
You can download the draft guideline from www.nice.org.uk from the 22nd of June. It will be divided into 12 or so chapters so you may want to specialise in a chapter. These Guidelines do effect UK midwifery practice in an enabling or disabling way and sometimes other countries refer to them as well so it is really important that a 'normal birth' perspective feeds into the process.
