Gwahoddiad - Invitation

34th IET Summer Weekend Meeting on the History of Science and Technology

7th-9th July 2006 at the University of Wales, Swansea

The IET History Group and the University of Wales, Swansea, would like to invite you to the 34th Summer Weekend Meeting on the History of Science and Technology.  This annual event attracts IET members and non-members interested in the history of science, engineering and technology.

Themes this year include the 50th anniversary of the first transatlantic telephone cable (TAT 1), engineering in wartime, rural power supplies and TV standards conversion.  There will also be papers on other subjects related to the history of science, engineering and technology.  A full programme will be issued to delegates in due course.

The University of Wales, Swansea

The University of Wales, Swansea hosted a previous History Weekend in 1989, organised by Vivian Phillips and the late Roy Barker. The Campus and the City have both seen substantial changes since 1989, including a new National Waterfront Museum, opened in September 2005. The lecture session normally held after dinner on the Saturday will take place instead in the late afternoon at the historic Swansea Museum, (formerly the Royal Institution of South Wales). There will be an informal trip to the power station of the Mumbles Railway on Friday afternoon.

Getting there

Swansea is on the main railway line from Paddington, and the journey time is just under three hours. The M4 passes a few miles to the North of Swansea and is easily accessed. The University is located on the seafront at the centre of Swansea Bay, about two miles from the railway station.

Accommodation

Swansea is a campus-based university and the halls, catering facilities, and lecture rooms are all very close together. Accommodation will be in a new en-suite hall of residence about 150m from the lecture room. Lectures will take place in the Faraday Lecture Theatre, part of the School of Engineering.
