We are very pleased to announce that the programme for the forthcoming BSHS Annual Conference at the University of Kent, Canterbury, is now available at <www.bshs.org.uk/2006annual>. The conference will take place between 7th and 9th July 2006 at the campus located on the downs above the sumptuous ancient city of Canterbury with its beautiful medieval walls and cathedral.

The programme contains two parallel sessions throughout the conference with nine specific themes explored in dedicated symposia. These themes include:

• Futures past: fiction, science, science fiction - enticing new readers with popular science.
• Lives less ordinary: Science, identity, and self-(re)presentation.
• From affinity to analysis: new beginnings in chemical theory, technique and institutions
• Contesting nuclear power
• The Bone Trail Outreach project
• Dreadnought science. the cultural construction of efficiency and effectiveness
• Worlds Apart: 19th century interpretations of 'gravity'
• Trans-Atlantic perspectives on evolution
• Scientific films: the role of scientific expertise

There are also sessions of individual papers on themes such as:

• Confidentiality, expertise and emotions: perspectives on medicine
• Internationalism, expertise and war
• Edges of objectivity
• Censorship, secrecy and power
• Optics, electrons and 'discovery'
• The New Garden: imperial expansion and science
• Passions, poets and natural theology
• Finches, Dodos and Worms: Perspectives on evolution
• Drugs, Plants and Scandal.

The above link also contains registration forms, information and a credit card booking system.  Substantially discounted rates are available for BSHS members; non-members may join up through the site to take advantage of these.  Student members are eligible to apply for support towards their travel costs from the BSHS Butler-Eyles fund. We urge you to book as early as possible as the deadline for discounted registration is 31st May 2006.
