'MEDICINE, SCIENCE AND SOCIETY IN IRELAND'

CALL FOR PAPERS

The annual conference of the Economic and Social History Society of
Ireland will be held in Queen's University, Belfast on Friday 17th and
Saturday 18th November 2006. Scholars are invited to submit abstracts on
the theme of 'Medicine, Science and Society in Ireland' through the
ages, encompassing early, medieval, early modern and modern periods.
This includes, but is not limited to:

-	The interaction of science and medicine with Irish society
-	Public health
-	The development of medical diagnosis and treatment
-	Attitudes to illness
-	Significant Irish contributions to scientific advances
-	The development of hospitals
-	Medical and scientific education
-	Religion and science
-	Science and national identity
-	Government policy on science and medicine
-	Science in the public sphere (museums, botanical gardens etc)
-	Medical anthropology
-	Medicalisation of race


Abstracts of 250 words should be submitted to Dr Marie Coleman, School
of History and Anthropology, the Queen's University of Belfast, 18
