Copyright Clearance for Print, Broadcast and Multimedia Production

The essential one-day starter course for those needing to copy and use existing content in their new productions and services.
Presented by Richard McCracken, head of IP at the Open University and co-author of Buying and Clearing Rights (Print, Broadcast and Multimedia – Routledge, 1995) and Alma Hales, Deputy Head of Intellectual Property at the Open University.  This one-day course will offer participants a clearer understanding of how to approach the process of rights clearance.

Encoding Digital Video for Streaming and Network Delivery – Introduction

Presented by:  Greg Newton-Ingham (University of East Anglia) and Murray Weston (BUFVC)
This one-day course provides an introduction to the problems and issues relating to digitising moving images for online delivery, and will cover:
  •       copyright status and educational exceptions
   •       video content - producing new content or reusing existing footage
   •       analogue and digital formats, telecine
   •       encoding, storing and networking content
   •       forms of delivery and use

This one day course follows on from the Introductory course, outlined above. It will provide detailed technical instruction on the following:
  •       considerations when producing moving image content
   •       system software and file formats for moving images
   •       compression; comparing codecs and tools for use
   •       storage and networking
   •       server technology, backing up and archiving

Authoring Streaming Media for the World Wide Web

Presented by:  John Smith (University of Edinburgh)
This course will provide participants with a thorough knowledge of how to author web pages which provide users with access to streaming video content. The three principal formats used during the day are Apple’s QuickTime, Microsoft’s Windows Media and RealNetworks RealMedia, concentrating on their use with Microsoft XP operating systems.

Shooting with High Definition Video

In this one day workshop we take a non-technical approach to learning more about high definition and the implications for shooting with HDV format cameras.  This is a hands on workshop enabling delegates to discover at first hand the advantages of working with this new and exciting format.

Finding and Using Audio-Visual Media in Further and Higher Education

Presented by:  BUFVC specialists Luke McKernan, Sergio Angelini, Murray Weston and Markeda Cole
The programme includes sessions on:
  •       practical sessions on the use of audio-visual media in Further and Higher Education
   •       an exploration of forms of delivery of audio-visual media – film, video, DVD, audio, CDs, streamed/downloadable media
   •       an insight into the processes of recording of television and radio programmes off-air under licence
   •       an understanding of UK copyright with an explanation of exceptions – includes a question and answer session
   •       a look at BUFVC services such as HERMES, TRILT and the Moving Image Gateway, and how they are of value to Further and Higher education
• information on using the Internet to access moving image resources
 
      Bookings will be accepted (i) accompanied by payment in advance by cheque or credit card, or (ii)
       when accompanied by a signed official order. Cancellations will not be accepted less than 14 days
       before the course date.
