10 - ENQUIRY HANDLING (www.aslib.com/training/4/11.html)
Illustrated throughout with sample enquiries and the pitfalls they present,
this course introduces participants to the full range of basic enquiry
answering techniques. Each session includes an introductory explanation,
group exercise, feedback and discussion, and delegates are encouraged to
contribute their own ideas and experience in a friendly and informal
atmosphere. Presented by the author of the best-selling Facet Publishing
book Success at the Enquiry Desk, this course concentrates on practicalities
rather than sources, but also includes suggestions for 25 multi-purpose
reference sources you can't afford to ignore.

On completing the course, you will be able to:
- understand fully what the enquiry wants
- get started on any enquiry without your mind going blank
- select and reject possible reference sources with confidence
- search indexes and databases efficiently
- know what to do if you can't find the answer
- meet deadlines every time
Course Director: Tim Buckley Owen

16 - METADATA: PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE (www.aslib.com/training/4/21.html)
Metadata is one of the most important, but least understood, aspects of the
modern information environment. This course demystifies the concept of
metadata, and shows how and why it is used, in a variety of environments. A
variety of commonly-used metadata formats will be demonstrated for example
Dublin Core, and AACR/MARC - and the way in which metadata creation relates
to the 'traditional' library/information tasks of indexing and cataloguing
will be outlined. Library/information workers are often called to create
metadata records; they may also be asked to evaluate, choose or create
metadata formats for their organisation's information. This course deals
with both these topics, in principle and in practice.

On completing the course, you will be able to:
- understand what metadata is, how it is used, and why it is important
- be familiar with several widely used metadata formats
- understand the relation between metadata, indexing and cataloguing
- be able to create metadata records
- be able to evaluate and choose appropriate metadata formats
Course Director: Dr David Bawden

17 - EVALUATING DIGITAL INFORMATION (www.aslib.com/training/4/13.html)
The ability to acquire external information appropriate to your
organisation's needs is a skill that no enterprise can afford to be without.
The competitiveness of business and the fast pace of change have increased
the need for rapid access to high quality information. The ease of access to
the Internet and the exponential growth of information available have
increased the amount of choice. If you are involved with the purchase of
information products, this course is essential.

On completing the course, you will be able to:
- feel more confident with your purchasing decisions
- select information products relevant to business needs
- evaluate comparable information sources
- compare & evaluate vendors
- define licensing requirements to suit your organisation
Course Director: Olivia Freeman

presentations. It is a very practical workshop and you will gain the

professionals.

Management". It is designed to give delegates an understanding of a key
records management tool - the records survey. Records surveys enable
information specialists to inventory records so that they can identify
issues within their organisation and gather data to plan for resolution. The
