Alison Walker Head National Preservation Office British Library 96 Euston Road London NW1 2DB Tel: 020 7412 7798 Fax: 020 7412 7796 _____ Dear colleagues In 2005 the British Library, in partnership with LIBER Preservation division, hosted the Cellulose Acetate Microfilm Forum (CAMF) - a two day, international conference examining the issues and exploring the options relating to cellulose acetate microfilm collections. The issue that recurred most throughout our discussions was that of cold storage and how long term cold storage (with film base transfer on demand) was felt increasingly to be central to any strategy for the care of cellulose acetate collections. This prompted further discussion about the level of existing opportunities for dedicated long term cold storage at a national level and the needs of heritage institutions for such storage. As a direct result of these forum discussions, the BL is seeking to quantify the need for cold storage( <5oc) in the UK, and we are inviting colleagues, via a short online questionnaire <http://www.bl.uk/about/collectioncare/questionnaire.html> , to supply information relating to the cold storage needs of their own collections. The BL will collate this information by the end of March 2006, to establish the national picture, and to help assess the scope for collaborative cold storage initiatives in the UK. The questionnaire takes only a few minutes to complete and should be submitted by February 28th 2006. We hope you are able to participate in this Collection Care initiative (http://www.bl.uk/about/collectioncare/home.html), and look forward to receiving you response.
