This is with regard to the IMA librarians' call that was circulated a couple of weeks ago. The following message (in English and in French) has been posted on "AutuersArabes" discussion list last Thursday by the undersigned. For further information or remarks, you may contact the personnel of the library at [log in to unmask] A.B, N.R., S.Y.M. ** About the library in Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris)*** * * It appears to us rather regrettable to restrict the current coverage and services of IMA Library without taking into account a well known context which should feed the reflection and discussion of the decision makers. Briefly, this context is as follows: - Only a small number of French libraries hold Arabic collections addressing the needs of scholars and/or general public. - Several of them are located in Paris, which justifies exploring and prospecting partnership and mutual complementarities in order to enhance the scope of existing services and better satisfy the existing patrons and attract new ones. - IMA Library is under a process of modernisation whereby the state of the art of the integrated library system currently implemented announces a worldwide access to its online catalogue, its Thesaurus and moreover a name authority file of around 12 000 bi-script full records. These are resources avidly expected by the professional community. - Thanks to this modernisation, IMA Library will be able to participate in cooperative projects such as union catalogues and digital libraries, among others. Undoubtedly, this will contribute to a better recognition of its collections and services. - The expertise of the IMA library and librarians may definitely serve as a valuable resource to colleagues in public libraries of the greater Parisian area for documents addressing a readership in Arabic. This is why we strongly suggest adopting a prospective approach aimed at defining the medium term objectives for the development of the library, which is not necessarily exclusive of economic returns. The managers of AuteursArabes discussion list Annick Bernard Nathalie Rodriguez Sara Yontan Musnik ****************************************************** www.imarabe.org ****************************************************** Il nous semble regrettable de vouloir aujourd'hui limiter le champ d'action de la bibliothèque de l'IMA sans tenir compte d'un contexte pourtant connu qui devrait fournir des éléments de réflexion : - le petit nombre de bibliothèques françaises possédant des fond arabes adaptés aux besoins de la recherche et/ou du grand public ; - l'existence à Paris - dans le même secteur géographique - de plusieurs d?entre elles, avec lesquelles il serait justifié d'explorer la complémentarité de l'offre et les partenariats possibles, cela afin d'enrichir les services proposés, de mieux satisfaire leurs publics respectifs, ou d'en attirer de nouveaux ; - la modernisation en cours à la bibliothèque de l'IMA : le système de gestion de bibliothèque à l'état de l'art en cours d'installation donnera enfin un accès web - donc universel - au catalogue de la bibliothèque, à son thésaurus, et à son fichier d'autorité auteurs ; il est à souligner que ces ressources sont très attendues par les professionnels ; - cette modernisation fournira à la bibliothèque de l'IMA l'occasion de participer à des actions communes aux bibliothèques françaises : par exemple le catalogue collectif de France, ou des projets de numérisation... , ce qui contribuera aussi à faire mieux connaître ses collections et les services associés ; - le recours que constitue pour les bibliothèques publiques de la région parisienne, qui doivent elles-mêmes servir de nouveaux publics, l'expertise des professionnels de l'IMA dans le domaine arabe. C'est pourquoi nous suggérons d'adopter une démarche prospective et sans précipitation qui aboutisse à fixer des objectifs à moyen terme, et qui n'exclue pas nécessairement des retombées économiques.
