The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal 2005 - Shortlist Announcement

Fresh Talent in the Running for UK's Top Picture Book Award

In its 49th year, a new name will be added to the list of distinguished illustrators who have won the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal, the UK's most prestigious award for children's book illustration. First won by Edward Ardizzone in 1956, the Medal has been awarded in recent years to such famous names as Chris Riddell, Shirley Hughes, Helen Oxenbury, Janet Ahlberg and Lauren Child.

None of the eight illustrators whose books appear on the shortlist for the 2005 CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal, announced today, has previously won the much-coveted award. Two of the illustrators, Emily Gravett and Rob Scotton, are shortlisted for their first books. (Please see below for the full shortlist).

The eight shortlisted titles amply demonstrate the exciting range of style and content for children of all ages to be found in illustrated books today. Whether:

* sharing the traumas (and admiring the headgear) of an insomniac sheep
* enjoying a new twist on the Red Riding Hood story
* entering the realm of dreams with a benevolent ghost
* rescuing a strange and mysterious realm from chaos
* sailing to Antarctica with a lost penguin
* delighting at the adventures of a toy action hero
* learning about wolves with a rabbit fatally engrossed in a library book, or
* delving into the magical world of mythical creatures

young readers aged from 3 years to 11 years and beyond are sure to find something to engage them on the 2005 shortlist.

"The standard was particularly high this year, and our shortlist was arrived at only after impassioned, though always good-humoured debate," comments Teresa Scragg, Chair of the Judges. "The experience, and commitment of the librarian judges to excellence in illustrated books for children fuelled the judging process throughout, and in the end, we arrived at a shortlist of which we are all immensely proud".

The Kate Greenaway Medal, named in honour of the distinguished illustrator is awarded for "outstanding illustration in a children's book". Both the Kate Greenaway Medal and its sister award, the Carnegie Medal, are awarded annually by CILIP: the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. The process by which books are nominated and judged for both awards is unique, with the shortlist and winners decided by an expert panel of children's librarians from the Youth Libraries Group of CILIP. Thanks to a bequest left in 2000 by children's book and illustration collector, Colin Mears, the Kate Greenaway winner also receives a cheque for £5000 in addition to the coveted medal.

The 2005 winners will be announced at a ceremony in central London on Friday 7 July 2006.

**Timetable Change 2006 - 07**

In order to respond to the needs of schools, public libraries, book retailers and publishers, the awards timetable will change in 2007. The CILIP Carnegie & Kate Greenaway Medals will be awarded for books published between 1 January and 31 August 2006; the shortlist will be announced on 16 April 2007 and the ceremony to announce the winner held on 22 June 2007. (Please see Editors' Notes below)

Notes for Editors

Over 2,600 reading groups in schools and public libraries have registered to take part in the shadowing scheme for the awards, involving over 50,000 children and young people. For further information visit www.ckg.org.uk/shadowing

The winner of the CILIP Kate Greenaway also receives The Colin Mears Award of £5000, made possible by a bequest from Colin Mears, a collector of children's books. Mears, a Worthing-based accountant had a long-standing interest in children's illustration and was a keen collector of works by Kate Greenaway and Edward Ardizzone.

The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2007. Plans for the Anniversary will be announced later in 2006.

Timetable change: CILIP wishes to increase public awareness of the Medals and respond to the needs of both publishers and booksellers. It has therefore created a longer schedule for the shortlisting from 2007. The new schedule will allow time to reprint shortlisted titles where necessary and distribute promotional materials to schools, public libraries and retailers before the shortlist announcement.
