BUFVC welcomes Gowers Review of Intellectual Property report
The BUFVC welcomes the publication of the Gowers Review of Intellectual
Property, commissioned by the Treasury and published last week. The
independent Review investigated the UK Intellectual Property Framework, and
the published report will have a significant impact on the preservation,
access and use of time-based media. The BUFVC's submission to the Review
addressed the use of copyright exceptions/exclusions, in particular,
scholarly access to recorded moving image and sound, the extension of
current licensing arrangements for use of formerly broadcast content, and
the licensing of broadcast news for re-use in education. The Gowers report
and original responses to the call for evidence (including that of the
BUFVC) can be downloaded from
http://www.hm-treasury.gov.uk/independent_reviews/gowers_review_intellectual
_property/gowersreview_index.cfm. A response from the BUFVC to the published
Review will be available shortly.

BUFVC becomes Observer Member of the Film Archive Forum
The BUFVC has been accepted as an Observer Member of the Film Archive Forum,
the national body representing the interests of the UK's public sector
moving image archives. The BUFVC was instrumental in establishing the Forum
in 1987, and has since provided its secretariat and, until this year, its
Chair. The BUFVC joins the British Library, the National Council on Archives
and the National Archives as bodies with a national remit which, as
Observers, have a direct interest in the Forum's objectives and future
development.
