Bookbindings from 1000 years in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek presents the exhibition "AußenAnsichten. Buch-einbände aus tausend Jahren" in its Treasure Room from 28 August until 15 De-cember 2006. Objects dating from the Carolingian Era up to the 20th century will be displayed. The show comprises c. 100 exhibits and illustrates a repre-sentative sample of the Library's collection of historical bookbindings.

Richly decorated luxury bindings from the High Middle Ages like the gold book chest of the Uta-Codex will be shown alongside early modern bindings created for the use of the nobility, books bound in monasteries and city workshops for everyday use and bindings designed by modern artists. In accordance with the Library's col-lection, most books were bound in South German workshops. However, the exhibi-tion also includes bindings commissioned for Bavarian owners abroad as well as outstanding examples of international styles which influenced local artists. Thus, the regional focus of the Library's holdings will be placed into an international perspec-tive.

Choice selections from the Library's binding collection have been presented to a general public on several occasions before. In 2001, the exhibition *Prachteinbände 870-1685" attracted large numbers of visitors. Several of the precious objects shown then will be on display again. In addition, the exhibition will provide the op-portunity to see bindings acquired by the Library in recent years, among them a medieval girdle book, a baroque binding from the monastery of Ettal, a Parisian Fanfare-binding and several books designed by artists.

The exhibition documents the Library's exceptional collection of historical bindings as well as its numerous activities directed at new acquisitions, preservation and con-servation as well as cataloguing and presentation.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue with 200 pp. and 90 full-page colour illustrations published in the Harrassowitz-Verlag Wiesbaden; it can be purchased during the exhibition for the price of 20,00 €.
