Following the success of Information Literacy: Recognising the Need Conference held at Staffordshire University on the 17th of May we are pleased to announce the second of a series of workshops which aim to share good practice and discuss new ideas in IL teaching and learning within the university sector.
This will be held at the Ashley Centre for Professional Management (Rooms LT114/116), Stoke site.
The speakers for the half-day (1:30pm - 4:30pm) workshop are:
Susie Andretta will be talking about perceptions of information literacy.
Susie Andretta will introduce the Six Frames of Information Literacy, a framework devised by Bruce, Edwards and Lupton (2006) to facilitate a discussion on the findings generated by the workshop run during the Information Literacy Conference, Staffordshire University, May 17, 2006. It is the aim of this session to discuss the data generated by the May workshop, and in particular to explore the information literacy approach adopted by HE institutions reflected by the participants’ responses to the first poster. Initial analysis of this data has identified the content and competency frames as predominant in HE institutions (see Information Literacy: from whose perspective? available at http://www.ilit.org/ilresearch/indexilresearch.htm) and this will be taken as a starting point for the session to address questions such as whether the competency and content frames alone are sufficient to equip students with lifelong learning attitudes, and if not, how do we promote information literacy approaches described by the other four frames. This is in line with Bruce et al’ s claim that “We believe that the greatest value of the frames lies in their power to challenge each of us to identify our primary frame(s) and to inquire into how our professional practice might developif we were willing to adopt a different frame or a wider range of frames.”
