Jansen and Amanda Spink "An analysis of Web searching by European AlltheWeb.com users" Information Processing & Management, Volume 41, Issue 2, March 2005, Pages 361-381 (shows that of 957,303 Alltheweb searches they examined in 2002, 33% used one term and 33% used 2.
