Hi,
Unsurprisingly, Britannica have refused to accept the findings of the
Nature article, claiming that the methodology employed was completely
flawed...
The idea of using wikis to create a shared resource between library and
students is interesting though. Butler University Libraries in the USA
use a reference wiki which aims to be a collaborative review of
databases, books, websites etc. that are part of the reference resources
available at the university. Librarians, staff and students are
encouraged to add reference materials they have used in their studies.
They can also add comments about the how useful they find the reference
materials in general. it's at
http://www.seedwiki.com/wiki/butler_wikiref/_page_directory?oldwpn=Butler%20WikiRef&olddoc=butler_wikiref

Can't say what level of contribution they actually get from students
though...

Hi
Bit of a jumbled thought stream here, but it's Friday ...
Some departments here have banned students from using Wikipedia
because they are using it indiscriminately. Come to that a lot of staff

don't understnd about it either. We're using it as a teaching tool to
talk
about other quality information and are producing a 'beyond wikipedia'
handout. All of these things are good hooks into showing other
resources, e.g. who would have thought that citation searching would
ever become sexy but Google Scholar has made that happen. There
was an article in Nature (I think it was) a while back which compared
some content on Wikipedia and Enc Britannica and found there was
not a lot of difference. I love the idea tho of sharing knowledge in
this
way and would like to do something with students to create a resource
using wiki software
