We experienced similar problems until we changed our procedures a couple of years ago. We were reluctant to start charging extra fines for non collection, so decided to instead remove 3 from the user's yearly allocation of ILLs (this varies according to their course/year of study). Alongside this, we realised that many people were not collecting until very late in the loan period, or ordering so many books that they could not read them all in the allocated time and therefore leaving some uncollected. We therefore decided to start restricting renewals to one application and also to charge £5 for any renewal.

These procedures combined have seen a significant drop in the number of uncollected loans.

Hope it helps...

Subject: ILL Charges

Dear All,

We are having concerns at the moment over the number of books we are returning to British Library, or other borrowers, which have not been collected by our customers.

We are in the process of installing a new Library Management System and therefore the time is right to review procedures.

Could you please let us know if you place a fine on the borrower for non-collection of books?

We would be interested also, in what you charge staff, undergrads, researchers etc. for ILL items. We are being urged to generate income, but would not want to charge more than other Institutions. At the moment it ranges from nil to £5.

Many thanks for your input.
