FREE event in Edinburgh 19th June - Career Development Group UK AGM and talk by Phil Sykes (Uni. of Liverpool)

CAREER DEVELOPMENT GROUP UK NATIONAL AGM 2006
National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh, 19th June 2006
WHO?
The Career Development Group is delighted to welcome guest speaker Phil Sykes, University Librarian, University of Liverpool

<http://www.liv.ac.uk/library/libstaff.html>
Phil is the author of a recent article in SCONUL Focus (34, pp.4-7) entitled 'Putting library staff back into libraries'. In a UK climate of budget cuts and controversial reports of library closures and staff redundancies, Phil argues passionately for the future of the profession. He defends the importance of direct personal contact with users, and pushes for the expansion of staffing levels. In place of competition between libraries over stock, buildings and technology, he advocates a "rivalry to make the maximum amount of friendly expertise available to every user of our libraries". Phil will share his own views candidly and is sure to spark a lively debate!
