Hello everyone Some of you may remember a few weeks back that a colleague from outside the NW raised the issue of differences in results sets that she had noticed when searching in Dialog Datastar and PubMed. After a bit of research, Dialog are going to introduce a fix to alleviate any differences, details of which are below. If you have any queries about this, please ask Gavin! I would like to thank Pam for highlighting the error in the Dialog searching. Dialog have responded to say there is a fix for this that the y will load: Position of the asterisk in DE DataStar places the asterisk at the end of the main MeSH heading, after t he slash. See the example: Accession number & update 10983903 Medline 20060101. Descriptors ACTIVITIES-OF-DAILY-LIVING/*; GASTROSCOPY/*AE (adverse effects), MO (mortality), PX (psychology); GASTROSTOMY/*AE (adverse effects), MO (mortality), PX (psychology); NUTRITIONAL-STATUS/*; QUALITY-OF-LIFE/*. AGE-FACTORS; AGED; Because the asterisk appears after the MeSH heading and slash, it is actually not possible to know whether the major concept is the MeSH main heading or the first subheading. In the case of 'Gastroscopy' in this record, we can't tell if GASTROSCOPY or ADVERSE EFFECTS is the major concept. On PubMed it is clearer, as the asterisk is placed at the beginning of the MeSH heading, when this is the major concept, so we know that in this record GASTROSCOPY is the major concept. Thus DataStar wil l search the first subheading in a list as a major subheading. When the fix is in place, this will no longer happen and all the subheadings will be treated the same.
