At UCLan the skills support has until now been funded under the Retention Strategy. We are looking to expand this into a broader provision of Learning Development which encompasses a wider range of activity - to effect this, some elements have been built in to the LT Strategy 2006-9 ( for example embedding study skills in the curriculum, transition support, employability, PDP & Personal tutoring).
We aim deliver this in the short term through local support for students ( faculty level) with support for staff on developing skills at module level - medium term.
Both the LT and retention strategies are delivered through the Learning Development Unit - but these issues are written into strategy and policy docs
Don't know if this helps..
Thanks for your reply, Sandra. It sounds as if the LD work at London Met
is well embedded in the policy-making structures. You mention "L&T
Forums" as well as your "L&T Strategy".
Since we (LD at Plymouth) were re-organised (against our own wishes) out
of the Educational Development team, we no longer feel we have clear or
established routes in to strategy and policy-making. Pertly, I guess, it
is up to us to forge new ones and assert ourselves!
I'd be interested to know from Sandra how the L&T Forums work - how
often do they meet, and how are they comprised? Also under what
auspices do you have input to the L&T Strategy?
I'd also like to hear from others about how their LD work is able (or
not) to influence/contribute to institutional strategy and
policy-making!
.
Best wishes

At London Met Learning Development, with the Centre for Academic
Development and Departmental Learning & Teaching Facilitators contribute
to the central Learning & Teaching Strategy, here the sorts of goals you
suggest are inscribed.
We push to raise the profile of Learning Development in L&T Forums and
the L&T Strategy. further, CAPD with LDU is supportive of subject staff
taking ownership of study & academic skills development in the
curriculum as part of good practice. We organise central and tailored
staff development sessio!
ns to support this alongside teaching & learning
