Applied eLearning and eTeaching in Higher Education

A book edited by Roisin Donnelly and Fiona McSweeney

Introduction

With the increasing drive towards the use of technology in higher education
teaching practice today, it is important for stakeholders (academic staff,
students, technological support staff and management) to exchange
information on their experiences. Understanding the impact of eLearning,
eTeaching, and eEducation is seen as fundamental to moving us all forward so
we can make greater use of the opportunities provided by the Internet.

E-learning is learning which takes place as a result of experiences and
interaction in an Internet environment. It is not restricted to a regular
classroom-based day and can take place in a variety of locations including
home, university and community locations e.g. libraries, cafes etc.
E-teachers are the new generation of teachers who will work in an Internet
environment in both regular and virtual classroom situations. They will
build new concepts of working in time and space. E-teachers collaborate,
build and discover new learning communities and explore resources as they
interact with information, materials and ideas with their students and
colleagues.

While case studies and evaluations of both eLearning and eTeaching have
provided food for thought in the recent past, we must be aware of the
essential need for further research to be undertaken to guide future
practice and planning initiatives. There is a lack of available research
about the process of implementing a technology as dynamic and evolving as
the Internet into higher education and examining the impact of eTeaching in
universities. Much of what has been written is more anecdotal than
conclusive.

Objectives

The aim of this book is to bring together practice experiences and research
in the development and use of eLearning and eTeaching in Ireland and
internationally for the purpose of, firstly supporting academic staff in
higher education who have or are thinking of introducing eLearning to
enhance the student experience; and secondly to value eTeaching and
illuminate best practice in the area of eAssessment. These objectives will
be achieved by the inclusion in the book of papers from varying stakeholder
positions and topics such as the range of approaches taken to eLearning,
eTeaching and eAssessment, challenges, solutions and outcomes and the impact
of eLearning on individual, group-based and institutional learning.

Audience

The audience includes professionals working in the field of eLearning and
eteaching and those who are concerned with the introduction of eLearning
practice.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to the following:

Designing, Assessing and Evaluating eLearning in Practice

Practitioner-based Research Methodologies for eLearning

Harnessing New eLearning Technologies

The Student Experience of eLearning
