Documentary: De Nadie

By Tin Dirdamal (Mexico, 2005)

Saturday 27 May 3:30pm

The impoverished Central Americans who leave their countries in hope of a better life in the US have a rough road ahead of them. De Nadie shows how, during their perilous 2500-mile journey through Mexico, they put their last money, dignity, health and life on the line. Mexico filmmaker Tin Dirdamal follows a number of refugees in a South-Mexican refugee centre, from where they hitch illegal rides on freight trains to the northern border.
Winner Best Documentary Sundance Film Festival 2006.

Documentary: Hijos de la Guerra

by Samantha Belmont (USA-France-Brazil-El Salvador, 2005)

Saturday 27 May, 6pm

During the war, a massive exodus of Salvadorian refugees aimed their compasses at the US for the chance of a better life. They soon found out that not only were they discriminated by Anglo-Americans but they were not even respected by the Latino communities in the U.S. As a result, they became very insular, with ostracized youths forming into groups for the purpose of self-defence and ethnic pride. The loose organizations quickly found common ground with Los Angeles gang culture, leading to the birth and rise of the now multinational Mara Salvatrucha.

Documentary: El Paso De Los Andes

by Thierry Deronne (Venezuela-Belgium, 2005)

Saturday 3 June, 3:30pm

In 1819, Simon Bolivar launched his quest to free South America from its Spanish colonisers, dreaming of a united continent which could one day become a world power. In the late 90’s Hugo Chavez reclaimed this dream and began his Bolivarian Revolution, exerting radical changes in Venezuelan society. This film shows the Bolivarian point of view about this process and how it sees itself and its role in the region’s future.

Documentary: Hasta Siempre

by Ishmahil Blagrove Jr. (UK-Cuba, 2005)

Saturday 3 June, 6pm

Cuba embraced tourism in the early 90’s as a means of surviving the Soviet Union’s collapse. As a result, the island has undergone many changes which now threaten the integrity of the revolution: racial discrimination, prostitution, consumerism and the re-emergence of class divisions. Hasta Siempre examines the result of the Cuban revolution from a predominantly Afro-Cuban perspective and asks the question: Can the revolution survive after the death of Fidel Castro?
