Hoy se ha presentado en el Ministerio de Cultura, en Madrid, la Biblioteca Virtual de Prensa Histórica, donde se pueden consultar y descargar publicaciones periódicas desde finales del siglo XVIII, muchas de ellas de carácter local, difícilmente accesible por cualquier otro medio. La digitalización se inició con los fondos de las Bibliotecas Públicas del Estado (llamadas anteriormente bibliotecas provinciales) y a ellos se van
incorporando otras instituciones. Recientemente se está digitalizando p ara su difusión la prensa clandestina del periodo de la Dictadura Franquist a.
Resulta indiscutible el interés de estos materiales para los investigadores de muchas áreas: literatura, historia, historia social, antropología.
