Shifting Power: Indigenous Movements in Bolivia

Talk by Professor Olivia Harris (Anthropology Lecturer, LSE)

Thursday 9 February, 7pm

“I believe only in the power of the people”

Evo Morales, the new President of Bolivia, is an Aymara Indian. He has pledged to end 500 years of injustice against his people.

Olivia Harris will explore the power of indigenous movements in Bolivia, at a critical time of change and hope for the majority of its citizens.

Olivia Harris’s main research area is in Highland Bolivia, and she has taught at research institutes and universities in many Latin American countries. Her interest concerns the growth of indigenous movements in the Americas, post-colonialism, and how indigenous

actors are reframing politics and notions of citizenship in many countries, as well as rewriting history.

She is a co-editor of the "New Directions in Anthropology" series for Cambridge University Press.
