There has been an overwhelming response to the call for FOLIO Course
Registration which was issued last Friday. All 50 places for the course are
now full. We are not able to take any further self-registrations and have
therefore closed the list.

 

All applicants who received an email confirmation from the folio list have
been enrolled. 

Any applicants with a message saying that their application has been sent to
the folio list owner have gone onto a waiting list.

 

NB. Owing to a slight technical glitch some of you may have received a
message saying that you were already a member of the list. If you received
this error message (because you had previously enrolled on the FOLIO no. 12
Course - Managing Service Quality) please could you forward this to
[log in to unmask] We will then check your application against the list
and process your registration manually.

Course aim...

 
This course aims to help participants gain an understanding and appreciation

for the value and importance of marketing and promotion in any type of
library or information service. 
 

Course objectives/ Learning outcomes...

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

*         Understand the process of marketing as it specifically relates to
library and information services.
*         Identify considerations when selecting specific marketing or
promotion methods for use within their own library or information context. 
*         Identify and evaluate approaches that might prove successful
within the context of a local Libraries Awareness Week. 
*         Describe the main considerations when planning and implementing a
marketing strategy. 
*         Engage with fellow participants in discussing issues connected
with the marketing and promotion of information services.

 

 

 

 

 

 

For the first time we are using SELF-REGISTRATION for this course. Please

follow closely the instructions given below. [Please note that places are

ONLY AVAILABLE TO UK LIBRARY STAFF WORKING IN A LIBRARY OR INFORMATION UNIT

(ACADEMIC, CHARITIES, NHS, PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION ETCETERA) THAT SUPPORTS

How to join the FOLIO Course: Promoting and Marketing Library and
Information Services (ProMISe)

 

There are three methods to join the Promoting and Marketing Library and
Information Services (ProMISe)

course. They are all managed through the FOLIO Jiscmail list:

 

Method 1: Via the FOLIO List Homepage

the third bulletpoint link "Join or leave the list (or change settings)".

Fill in your email address, name, and click on the 'Join...' button. Leave

all other settings on the default settings. 

 

Method 2: Via Email 

Send the command: SUBSCRIBE folio <forename surname> 

To either: [log in to unmask] or [log in to unmask] 

 

Subject: The subject is ignored by LISTSERV, so can be left blank. 

Message:     Ideally, all that should be present in the Message body is the

command SUBSCRIBE folio <forename surname>. 

Note: Your email address is automatically taken from your email, as is your

name if present. 

 

Example: SUBSCRIBE folio Joe Bloggs 

      

    This is the standard subscription, in this case subscribing to the

Promoting and Marketing Library and Information Services (ProMISe)

course (on the FOLIO discussion list) with the name "Joe Bloggs".   

 

Method 3: Via the Jiscmail Subscriber's Corner facility 

Subscriber's Corner is a powerful tool for managing your subscriptions. It

may seem detailed to use at first but, once you get used to it, is much more

flexible than other methods.

When you are in Subscriber's Corner - On the left-hand navigation bar, type

in folio in the 'Narrow selection' field. Change 'Show' to "All lists" and

then click on Submit.

 

You should then see a table containing only the folio list. Tick the box

to the left of folio, at the bottom of the table change the drop down

listbox to "Subscribe" and click on 'Submit changes'. {DO NOT attempt to 

join the similarly-named e-folio list]

 

NOTE: Once you have submitted your request to join via any of these three

methods you will have registered a provisional booking for the course. Your

booking will be confirmed by email during the week beginning Monday 5th June
2006. 

Please only join if you are seriously considering undertaking

the course. If your circumstances change in the meantime please unsubscribe

at your earliest opportunity to free up a place for another librarian. We

shall maintain a "waiting list" for all applications received after the

first 50 places.

Additional Information about FOLIO

What is FOLIO?

  a.. FOLIO is a programme of online learning for health librarians. FOLIO

forms part of the NLH Librarian Development Programme which was established

to provide support for librarians moving into new roles, focusing on the

development of skills in health informatics and knowledge management,

especially related to digital libraries.

Why online learning?

  a.. FOLIO was set up because librarians often find it difficult to get

away from the workplace to attend training, whether because of staff

shortages, limited budgets, travel time or other difficulties. 

 

Who is involved?

  a.. FOLIO is delivered by a team based at ScHARR, University of Sheffield.

It is commissioned by the National Library for Health.

 

  b.. The FOLIO Curriculum Group determines the syllabus. The group includes

representatives from the CILIP Health Libraries Group and the LKDN Workforce

Development Group; an e-learning expert; a graduate of the FOLIO pilot; as

well as suppliers and commissioners. The group is informed by training

needs analyses and by wide consultation on training needs. 

 

How long will the course take to complete? 

Assessment is by a portfolio compiled over the duration of the course. For

the production of a good portfolio, students should spend about 2-4

hours per week on the tasks and exercises.   

 

How much does the course cost? 

Costs for the UK-version of the course are being met by the NLH Librarian

Development Programme. The course is therefore free at the point of

delivery. 

 

What if I have to miss a few days due to holidays or work commitments? 

It is possible to "catch up" within a two-week extension automatically

offered at the end of the course. Please note that this particular course

attempts to minimise commitments around the time of Bank Holidays.

 

What if I work part-time? 

Previous participants have found it possible to complete FOLIO courses even

when working on a part-time basis. Part-time participants will particularly

benefit from the two-week extension offered at the end of each course.

 

Can I join part-way through the course? 

Unfortunately due to issues concerning group dynamics, together with

administrative arrangements, it is only possible to participate if you have

pre-registered for the course.  However we naturally hope that the course

will be so successful that it will be repeated on a later occasion!
