PhD Studentship in Geosciences – Ultra-High Pressure Orogeny

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship at the Institute of Mineralogy and Petrography Basel in the field of ultrahigh-pressure petrology. The Ph.D. project concentrates on the investigation multiple orogeny in the Qinling mountain belt (Central China), where several high- and ultrahigh-pressure events took place forming a complex orogenic collage. The project involves explicit field work as well as analytical work to decipher the tectonometamorphic history of the orogen. This project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), is a collaboration between the Institute of Mineralogy and Petrography Basel, the Department of Geosciences at Freiberg University of Mining and Technology, the Chinese Academy of Geosciences Beijing, and scientific colleagues from Stanford and Santa Barbara (U.S.A.).

The ideal candidate should be highly motivated and have a background in metamorphic petrology and orogenic processes. An interaction in a multidisciplinary environment is necessary. Applicants should have a Diploma or Master's degree (or Bachelor’s degree with honours) in geology or mineralogy. Experience with analytical equipment (electron microprobe, XRF, XRD) is highly desirable. Knowledge of the German language is required as the candidate will have to assist during student exercises. The successful applicant will begin her/his Ph.D. in January 2007. The position will be at PhD level of the SNF (about 21,000 EUR per year).

Please submit your complete application (statement of scientific interests, curriculum vitae with publication list, copy of diplomas, list of 3 references with contact information) to PD Dr. Leander Franz, Mineralogisch-Petrographisches Institut, Universität Basel, Bernoullistrasse 30, CH-4056 Basel, Switzerland.  Deadline: 15. Nov. 2006
