Hi everybody, not sure this will work this time (january 2006 posting is probably not yet set-) 3rd attempt). Anyway, here is a reminder Peter sent recently and that I am forwarding to you. This is a brief reminder that Friday is the deadline for abstract submission to this years EGU meeting in Vienna, Austria, to be held on April 2-7th 2006. We hope you may consider submitting your abstract to Session GM18 , entitled "Orogenesis - from the basins to the peaks" The session is designed to explore how orogenic exhumation may be reconstructed through application of suitable thermochronometers. In order to fully document how an orogen evolves over time requires an integrated approach of investigating the ancient sediment record in conjunction with the modern mountains. Thermochronometers, especially those applicable to shallow crustal levels, have been applied effectively in several orogenic settings to understand long term exhumation rates. The early history of the orogen is often absent having been removed through a combination of tectonic activity and erosion. Applying low temperature thermochronometers to the detrital sedimentary record allows us to gain insights into the earliest evolution of the orogen and answer fundamental questions regarding the constancy of exhumation over geological timescales. We encourage contributions from those working within active orogens and foreland basins so that new and innovative approaches to models of orogenesis can be highlighted. Abstract deadline, January 13th , 2006. See the EGU website for more information: http://meetings.copernicus.org/egu2006/ Alternatively contact the convenors: Linda Kirstein ([log in to unmask]) Peter Clift ([log in to unmask]) Geoffrey Ruiz ([log in to unmask]) Hopefully see you in Vienna!
