Carol et all, The best filmic example I can think of is le Grand Voyage ( 2004) in which an Arabic-speaking father and his "rebellious" French-speaking son take a road trip from France to Mecca. They understand each other perfectly but refuse to speak the same language. It's marvelous. For TV: there's Darmok, the infamous episode of Star Trek TNG and of course Hush from season 4 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer (in which the characters have their voices stolen
and have to communicate without language -- one of the best eps of the entire series).
There's also some interesting fun with language difference on Lost with the Korean couple: she's fluent in English (which she doesn't reveal til mid-way into the first season) and he can't speak a word. Nonetheless, the rest of the survivors continue to speak English to him while he responds in Korean - and gee, there's scarsely any miscommunication. Fancy that!
