As an example of how not to represent the Middle East, how about "The Sheltering Sky", which butchers Bowles' novel and "orientalizes" the indigenous people of North Africa (I am indebted for that insight to Professor Jeannette Bicknell, whose article on the film will appear in the next edition of Film and Philosophy).
