To all: 1) An note for Dan Shaw's query about the distinction between film-philosophy versus film criticism added to previous comments on focus: Film-Philosophy avoids sweeping and unsubstatiatable generalizations, whereas this is the meat of film criticism. So, besides focus, methodology is the distinguishing factor. 2) People who think film is not a language think that the minimum unit is the shot. People who think that its the frame however, can see that in fact film is definitely and demonstrably a language, albeit a very young one. Which is it, really? It's true that the potential of the frame is vastly underutilized as yet, but still it's there. Especially as goes the potential of the medium for philosophical investigations - if you don't accept the primacy of the frame as a unit of meaning, consider.
