question . . . but maybe not, at least not if one is
looking
to characterize the rom-com genre at a particular
time
. . . i'm inclined to argue that woody is so sui-generis
that,
while he inescapably reflects the world in which he
works,
he reflects it in such idiosyncratic ways that a
template
of the cultural norm -- of the kind i think cary
grant
provides for 1940 and meg ryan provides for 1990 --
needs
to come from elsewhere . . . then we can see how the
exceptional
woody allen stuff maps onto the general plan
but
maybe i'm wrong about this
