Well they wanted to, but because the mobile number was cancelled, they had no way of arranging such a meeting. The guy trying to sell the bike saw me writing down the registration number at the time, so effectively I'd alerted him to the fact that I was on to him. But the Police say they are now paying particular attention to ads for this particular make and model of bike being advertised in the area. So anyone trying to sell a Honda Varadero in the North or East London areas in the next few months should watch out!!!

So although you informed the Police - you didn't go for an undercover meeting so they could catch them - cos they would only move on to some other less unsuspecting victim.
Oh well........glad you saved £2500.

Well not really - the Police never identified or caught up with the perpetrators, but it did mean I was able to protect myself from being ripped off for £2,500. If I had handed over my money, I would have sent off the log book, only to have the Police turn up at the door to reclaim the bike for the real owners, presumably an insurance company.....

Actually, I found this one quite useful when I was recently shopping around for a new motorbike. I was slightly suspicious of one guy who insisted on bringing the bike to me for a test drive instead of revealing his home address or home telephone number. I took down the registration number at the time and discovered that although he appeared to have all the bike's documents including what appeared to be a valid tax disc, according to DVLA website it had been untaxed for over a year.
I reported it to the police and it transpired that the bike was stolen and that the mobile number used for the advert went off-line the next day.

If you go to www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk you can do a search of the DVLA database using a registration number and vehicle make.

The information returned covers date of last issue of a V5, when the tax is due, and emmissions details.

All very interesting for someone who wants to try and get just that bit more information about you! Although the information is reasonably easy to get anyway via other means, but it is interesting to look at non-the-less.

Simon Howarth.
