My issue is not about the value of the events, nor about any value that this
particular event has, nor is it about the good that events do in terms of
raising awareness.

My issue is that we have long had on this list a code of conduct that the
list moderator sometimes reminds us of. I will paraphrase it as follows:

"Every contributor to the list may advertise an upcoming commercial product
or service, provided they are a net contributor (hard to define, but I think
we all know what is meant here), provided that advert is simple, proper,
unobtrusive, and delivered once and once only."

That rule was formulated because we had a few years ago both a sudden
proliferation of adverts by non contributors and also a flood of outrage
against this list being used for Spam. While it is capable of several
interpretations it is a good rule based upon common sense, courtesy and
dignity of both sender and recipients. It is aligned with the stature of
the people on this list, all of whom except the list moderator are guests.

Several of us advertise events periodically. I do it, Masons do it, and I
apologise, but I cannot bring the others to mind. We are all contributors
to the list, often with strongly held opinions, or with expertise, or better
yet, both! Thus we obey the netiquette that prevails here.

It is when the netiquette is broken that my hackles rise. "Apologies for
cross posting" is *always* Spam if it contains any commercial element at
all. It means as well that the sender knows they are outside the prevailing
netiquette, and expects that an apology will solve it. That is as
discourteous as my punching you on the nose while apologising to you.

I stand fully by my argument that this post was outside the spirit of this
place.

As I am a guest on this higher education discussion list, I probably
shouldn't pontificate on the dos and don'ts. However, via various JISC
lists, I have found out about and attended very useful courses posted by
more academically-focused organisations who wouldn't promote their wares to
the local authority audience to which I belong - in some cases, these
organisations don't otherwise contribute, but I've been glad to hear about
their stuff.

Surely if the volume isn't great, the relative harm of such communications
is limited? "Apologies for cross posting" is a pretty good marker, as you
can treat it as having the meaning "delete me if you delete this sort of
thing". And deleting an email is very quick, unless, as I say, the volume is
intrusive. As we're all likely to be corporate subscribers, there aren't any
legal implications of the messages anyway.

I think Tim's point (which I have seen him express before) is that it's
generally OK to advertise something here that you are running or involved in
-if- you are a contributor (i.e you've added value) -and- it's on topic.

Simply signing up to the list and sending out ads is to be deplored.
