They are good thoughts and make sense. But the footer *appears* to override
the duty of confidentiality. "it's no longer private, so there!" is what I
read in the footer. Ah paranoia is such a wonderful thing to suffer from.
And it isn't even Friday

You could password-protect a document and phone the recipient or does he not
have a secure e-mail address i.e. GSI/GSX but I dare say Security guys could
read it in any event. Also, if the employees could read it they will surely
have a duty of confidentiality. Just some thoughts.

Subject: Email privacy and footnotes

I have just emailed my local council with a general enquiry and received the
following sentence in the automatic acknowledgement:

"This e-mail may be read by employees of the Council and is therefore not to
be considered private by the recipient."

This means that, even if I had put "For Pete Bloggins's Eyes Only" the email
reply overrides my intention and says "Not private after all".

Now I know I sent it to a generic address, and I have not yet had any
correspondence direct with Mr Bloggins, but I am assuming this is part of a
standard footer added to all council emails. If so, and I intended to enter
into a confidential correspondence, what does the standard footer really do
to the confidentiality? After all, it overrides my intentions.

I know a council may be a specialist area because of FoIA, not my expertise
area. If FoIA makes anything "unprivate anyway", what if this footer were
from a non FoIA affected corporation?
