‘Before Depression’ is an interdisciplinary project arising from collaboration
between English researchers at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle and
the University of Sunderland and funded for three years by the Leverhulme
Trust. The project is designed to address the question: ‘what was depression
like before it was depression?’ It will explore the development and
persistence of the ‘depressive’ state within British culture of the long
eighteenth century. The project is led by Professor Allan Ingram (Northumbria)
