Putting on my aging Speech Therapist hat I would agree with what you say and I have to admit that there seems to be very little available. A US firm has produced the Speech enhancer using speech recognition which I feel may take some getting used to http://www.speechenhancer.com The echoVoice has a throat microphone http://www.hear4you.com There are other amplifiers on EmpTech under Communication. I think going for an electrolarynx may not help as you will still have the breathing problems to generate the vibration, tongue, mouth movements for articulation but I would take the advice of a Speech Therapist specialising in Voice. Patrick Poon Communication Matters [log in to unmask] We are seeking help for a severely disabled lady with speech difficulties. She is very bright but finds great difficulty in communicating due to exhaustion after voicing maybe three words very quietly. Her problem is that her ability to speak is severely restricted by the small volume of air that she can generate so great energy is expended to pronounce one word. Sometimes a whole sentence is understandable. Financing the equipment is not a problem as there is a Trust to deal with her needs. Many years ago I met a research fellow at the old Kings College and he was pursuing voice recognition systems like Dragon. However we believe, maybe incorrectly, that voice recognition may not be the way forward for this lady as she can almost speak herself. It needs some ingenuity to think through to a solution maybe combining throat microphones? And amplification and some additional intelligent software. Can you help?
