As quoted on the Cumbria Archive Service website www.cumbria.gov.uk/archives (so please pass this message on to anyone who may be thinking of visiting the Cumbria Record Office & Local Studies Library, Barrow, during this period):

MAJOR RESTRICTIONS TO BARROW SEARCHROOM SERVICE 11 DECEMBER 2006-2 JANUARY 2007

As previously advertised, the searchroom at Barrow will be closed for redecoration during part of December 2006.   The dates have now been finalised and the searchroom will therefore be closing from Monday 11 December until the end of the year.

An extremely restricted service of microfilm sources and printed reference works will be made available within the main Central Library. Microfilms are likely to include back copies of most of the local newspapers, together with a limited number of parish registers.   We regret that it will not be possible to produce any additional archive sources from the strongroom.

We anticipate that a normal searchroom service, with full access to original records, will be restored from Tuesday 2 January 2007.  Please note that recent reductions to our daily opening hours, which have been separately announced, will continue for the time being.

Postal and Email enquiries will hopefully be unaffected.

Aidan Jones.
