'Can One Rely on Knowledge? Anthropology and Medical Research in Developing Countries'

Medical research often involves trials without direct benefits for participants. One way to improve matters is to ensure that people consent in full knowledge. But just how reliable is communication in this context between Western researchers and participants in the developing world?

Speaker: Dame Marilyn Strathern

'A keen-eyed analyst of the human mind, an acute observer of other societies, and a powerful explainer of our own'
Professor Strathern was an undergraduate and later a graduate student at Girton College, Cambridge. Her distinguished career in anthropology began in 1966 with her appointment to the Museum of Ethnology in Cambridge. Since then she has held a succession of positions at the Universities of Manchester and Cambridge. She is currently William Wyse Professor of Social Anthropology at Cambridge and Mistress of Girton College. Professor Strathern is best known for her ethnographical work in Melanesia and in Britain, particularly on kinship, gender, society, new reproductive technologies, and cultural and intellectual property rights.
