The Green Man pub behind Great Portland Street tube station 6pm onwards For those of you who knew Mario Guimaraes (Brunel anthropology postgrad and anthropology-matters steering group member) this is a charity he supported and was going back to Brazil to help with before his untimely death last year. This even has been organised by Mario's partner Carina See invitation for the event in the attached file. Information about the creche: The Maes Futuro do Amanha creche is based in Recife, North-East Brazil. It was founded in 1996 and 13 staff currently look after 68 children betweet the ages of 8 months and 6 years, from the local community of San Martin. Most of the children's parents have to work all day in order to raise the money to feed their families, and there is no other institution in the area that can look after the children during the day. The centre was set up by volunteer Tereza Cristina Santana to fill this gap and to prevent the children from ending up on the streets. It is a means to educate children from pre-school age to ensure that they are given the opportunity to build up skills so they can make their dream of a better future a reality. The creche receives very little contribution from the local government and survives through private donations. There is often no money to pay for essentials like food, clothing or even cleaning materials. The current facilities are very basic: they consist of 3 overcrowded, hot rooms without natural light and no outside space. The children simply are deprived from space to be kids - to play or run around. Currently, the directors of the creche are bidding for waste land from the local authority in order to build a spacious house, for which they need to raise about 4.000 pounds. Our fundraising event will support the construction of the new house if the bid is successful, and will otherwise be used to improve the current facilities. Remember, every little helps! For instance, £2 can buy food enough to feed a child for 15 days. So come down to our party, join in the fun and help the children of one of Recife's poorest neighbourhoods.
