They may, for example, be seeking to explore the nature of policy issues or policy processes, comparing policy over time or between countries, analysing policy delivery or evaluating the performance of policies. The School will be open to postgraduates from any discipline, working in any field of public policy. The School is provided by the ESRC UK Centre for Evidence Based Policy and Practice at Kings College, London which supports and develops the contribution of social science to policy and practice. Professor Charlotte Humphrey, Director of the Centre, will direct the School, and colleagues from the Centre will be tutors. Information on the work of the Centre can be found on http://www.evidencenetwork.org/. The School has three aims: 1. to enhance doctoral students' perspectives on how policy is made and delivered in fields relevant to their research 2. to introduce students to the sources - and the challenges they represent to researchers - which they will need to access for policy relevant research 3. to develop students' skills in the methods and techniques appropriate to undertaking policy relevant research. Each day's programme will comprise a mix of presentations by course staff, exercises (including discussion groups and hands on practice with sources and methods), and seminars with expert outside speakers. Participants will receive a course pack with reference material for retention. The School will be held at Kings College's campus at Waterloo, Central London. Residential accommodation will be available on campus in single en-suite study bedrooms for those who require it. All disability can be accommodated, and most areas of the campus are accessible, please indicate when applying if you have any form of disability and we can follow this up by an assessment of your needs. This prospectus and the course material can be made available in alternative formats e.g. large print or on disc, if required. The School will be free, but participants will need to pay for their own accommodation, meals and travel. Once offered a place at the School, participants will be asked to pay a deposit of £100, returnable upon completion of the School.
