An exciting opportunity exists for an analyst/programmer in the Statistical Computing Team within Statistical Sciences. The Statistical Computing Team is a small specialist group focusing primarily on the development and support of high quality statistical computer applications for use by both statisticians and scientists throughout non-clinical Research and Development internationally. These systems, usually developed in SAS or Visual Basic, are used to free statistical resource for work in new areas and also to speed the drug development process by reducing the data analysis and reporting cycle time. The team are also responsible for supporting the installations of several statistical packages used by GSK and for the maintenance of the department’s website. You will contribute effectively to, and participate enthusiastically in all aspects of the system development lifestyle. • A clear analytical mind and good communication skills are essential throughout the development of a system, but particularly when dealing with scientists and statisticians during the gathering of requirements and the support of the completed system. • Problem solving skills and an ability to think creatively will be required during the design and coding of the system in order to achieve the most efficient and usable implementation of the requirements. • Testing of systems must be done with an eye for detail and a thorough, methodical approach to ensure that all systems delivered by statistical computing satisfy the requirements of the scientists and to prevent the team from having to correct problems during the systems production use. Development of systems is shared across the team so an ability to work well as part of a team is essential. The variety of work undertaken by the team, the number of client groups and applications supported means that the successful applicant will have excellent workload management skills and be adaptable to changing priorities. You will have a BSc / MSc degree with a statistical/mathematical or computing component. Good evidence of both components is required, however work experience for one of these components will be acceptable, should formal qualifications not have been attained. Experience of programming in SAS or VBA would be beneficial.
