An exciting opportunity exists for an analyst/programmer in the
Statistical Computing Team within Statistical Sciences.

The Statistical Computing Team is a small specialist group focusing
primarily on the development and support of high quality statistical
computer applications for use by both statisticians and scientists
throughout non-clinical Research and Development internationally. These
systems, usually developed in SAS or Visual Basic, are used to free
statistical resource for work in new areas and also to speed the drug
development process by reducing the data analysis and reporting cycle
time. The team are also responsible for supporting the installations of
several statistical packages used by GSK and for the maintenance of the
department’s website.

You will contribute effectively to, and participate enthusiastically in
all aspects of the system development lifestyle.

• A clear analytical mind and good communication skills are
essential throughout the development of a system, but particularly when
dealing with scientists and statisticians during the gathering of
requirements and the support of the completed system.

• Problem solving skills and an ability to think creatively will be
required during the design and coding of the system in order to achieve
the most efficient and usable implementation of the requirements.

• Testing of systems must be done with an eye for detail and a
thorough, methodical approach to ensure that all systems delivered by
statistical computing satisfy the requirements of the scientists and to
prevent the team from having to correct problems during the systems
production use.

Development of systems is shared across the team so an ability to work
well as part of a team is essential.

The variety of work undertaken by the team, the number of client groups
and applications supported means that the successful applicant will have
excellent workload management skills and be adaptable to changing
priorities.

You will have a BSc / MSc degree with a statistical/mathematical or
computing component. Good evidence of both components is required,
however work experience for one of these components will be acceptable,
should formal qualifications not have been attained. Experience of
programming in SAS or VBA would be beneficial.
