DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AND PUBLIC HEALTH
UCL

Data Manager/Programmer - Whitehall II Study (Ref: 277)

We are seeking to employ a full-time data manager with experience of
database management and programming to take over management of this large
and complex dataset. The successful candidate will have responsibility for
planning and co-ordinating the policy of data management and for ensuring
that data preparation is timely and efficient, meeting prescribed deadlines
(e.g. as stated in grants awarded).

Computing facilities comprise a network of personal computers, maintained by
a full-time network manager. Access and SAS are currently used to manage
different parts of the study datasets. A database of study participants is
maintained for study management, whilst data analysis is performed largely
with the statistical package SAS. The study database has been rationalized
with participants details held on an Access database and all the research
data held in a SAS database.

Applicants must hold a degree in a numerate discipline, have a strong
background in computer programming, have experience/expertise in the use of
databases such as SAS, including data management, programming and the
ability to communicate effectively in written English. The ability to work
effectively in a team, to deadlines and unsupervised, with accuracy and an
eye for detail, are all essential qualities required of applicants. The post
is graded as Grade 8, the salary for which ranges from £33,925 to £42,335
per annum inclusive. Initial funding is secured for three years, renewal
subject to the success of future grant applications.
